Where to now?

April 2026

Five months have passed since the devastating news that my husband Gil had not long to live, It was only six more weeks. My life was turned upside down and inside out. Like being hit by a big wave in the surf.

So many changes. Paradoxically, through this dreadful time I sold, packaged and sent 8 paintings away. I also won a Peoples Choice award for a little miniature “Abandoned Dinghy’.

Life is settling now and in the past week I have returned to the studio to work on some paintings started in January but quickly abandoned.

Usually at the beginning of a year I review my progress and set new goals and directions. I have not done that yet for 2026. For a while I thought about grand changes like downsizing but soon abandoned that idea and instead am making my home easier to manage and safer. I have demolished the structures of my veggie and raspberry beds and am in the process of designing something new that may/or may not be wallaby proof.

After some enquiries, I distracted myself for several weeks cataloguing Gil’s extensive model railway collection and have begun selling what I can. I have learned much more about the hobby and had help from some generous colleagues of Gil’s. I will continue selling online.

Another distraction was running a workshop for the Bellerive Community Arts Centre titled Tantalising Textures where the focus was on painting with acrylic paint without using brushes. Some wonderful images were created and the experience seemed to be enjoyed by all.

I have six new paintings and 2 or 3 reworks on the go at last.

The first two are from my Waves series (#1117 and #1118). This is the first layer. I want to retain the transparency of the breaking waves but also create complexity in the white wash.

The second two started out as more realistic still life compositions of jars and bottles but I was not inspired by that approach so have been intuitively building up the surface. I like them more now but still a way to go.

The next two are based on small studies with a landscape theme completed last year. I used a palette of pthalo turquoise, alizarin crimson and Indian yellow. They are #1120 and #1119. The second one had lost its light and the white patch is an attempted to bring it back.

I am loving getting back to painting. It and gardening are my meditation spaces.

I regularly exhibit at the Art Society of Tasmania and local charity art exhibitions.

My work is available on an Australian online art gallery Bluethumb although there have been many changes to that platform including an increase in the commission they take. something else to be reviewed!
