The importance of light

Spending time at 3 large community art exhibitions in the past few weeks has revealed the importance of a good light source when displaying paintings.

The Art Society’s Annual exhibition in the Long Gallery was the best ever. The standard of work and curation was excellent. The lighting was exceptional and I wandered for many hours, enjoying the art works, both 2D and 3D. I did ponder if the buyer might be somewhat disappointed when taking the painting home to a spot that lacked good lighting. I have a Richard Bacon piece that suffered this fate.

I was thrilled to receive a Highly Commended award and $200 for my abstract titled Elemental 1 at the and happily surprised to sell the painting and meet the collector at the Opening.

Today I visited the Kingborough Art Prize at the Kingston Hub, a recently opened community space with a very industrial feel. Very high ceiling but little natural light. Also it seemed there were no spot lights or artificial lighting either The exhibition looked somewhat drab despite there being some very good work on display. However 20% of art works had sold and the exhibition doesn’t close until Sunday 28th. I have 3 pieces on display so here’s hoping. I think the old grand community Hall at Kingston Beach was a superior venue.

Using some of my acrylic ink printed tissue collage papers, I created three rectangular vertical vases of flowers, attempting to refer to images of tulips, dahlias and poppies rather that my imagination. Well the poppies became tulips, but I think I created the essence of my dahlia and tulips

Reworking two older paintings in a palette of blues, resulted in the two below. I was happier with the first one and tried to add what I felt worked into the second one. Not entirely sure they are finished so will ‘rest’ them for a while.

What are working well at the moment are 4 small abstract landscapes. Well not the first one! perhaps! I like the second and fourth ones best. Will see where these go??

My experiment of the month was to create two abstract works with some representational elements, mainly bottles on a table. They didn’t work as I wanted, I think the oil and wax is too soft and also I went for a muted palette which didn’t appeal. Here are images of the stage when I abandoned the idea and where they are now.

The current versions are intuitive. Wish my garden was as colourful!

The Royal Hobart Show ‘Art on show” exhibition is coming up later in October at a new venue, the Goods Shed at the controversial Macquarie Point site. I have 3 pieces ready; two florals and one landscape. The photos are a bit darker than reality.

I wonder what the lighting will be like at the Goods Shed!
