Wind waves and wotifs

Until recently I‘ve had little trouble deciding if a painting or set is done, completing all the record keeping and moving on to the next set. Now I find myself procrastinating. It is that my stockpile is too large, am I losing my confidence, are there too many wotifs or is it simply that the pressure is on with four upcoming exhibitions to prepare for. Deciding a painting is finished does not mean I can’t go back and review it with new eyes or a different skill set. I often do.

In my last newsletter, I was working on two new coastal paintings; trying to capture the energy in the wind and waves. These are now finished and titled #1099 and #1100 Wind and waves collide 1 and 2.

They will be double mounted on boards ready for framing. Two others were done in this way recently and framed ready for upcoming exhibitions. Inspired by wind and wave, I embarked on two more. And again I am very pleased.

These were all painted with sillicon wedges and palette knife. Think I have captured the energy and movement.

Getting back to my uncertainty and wotifs.

More experimentation with acrylic inks and tissue lead to two new works titled #1103 Fireworks 1 and #1104 Fireworks 2. There are some beautiful and interesting marks and a lovely luminosity from the collaged tissue. Maybe I am distracted by those and not seeing the composition clearly. Still more work to do. But what? I fear obliterating the parts I like. They look messier in the photos than in reality. They are 60x60cm.

Wanting a break from the cool blues of waves I chose a warm palette of red/orange and neutrals for the next two. These are many layered, including a turquoise one under there somewhere. They measure 60 x 60cm and are called #1105 Elemental 1 and #1106 Elemental 2

I have had some serious interest in some of my floral paintings recently which resulted in my retrieving and reviewing some abstract florals from my pile. I have worked further on this one. #1073 Burst of summer 3

Upcoming are the Art Society’s Annual exhibition at the Long Gallery, the Rotary Hobart Art Show at the Boardwalk Gallery, Wrest Point, the Kingborough Art Prize and the Royal Hobart Show exhibition at the City Hall. That’s a maximum of 11 paintings. It’s such a busy time

As well, the Bellerive Community Art Centre has a display of my classmates the Friday Painters work until the end of September and their Annual Exhibition and sale in early November.
