Black and white

After my recent foray into colour which I love, I am experimenting with a black and white exercise from Jenny Nelson, a US artist and teacher. I have followed Jenny for a while; she is a colourist and often uses muted colours. Some of these are not ones I would use; this green for example. But I love her work; very complex layering. Jenny works on one painting at a time; something I haven’t the patience or discipline for.

She occasionally runs free short courses leading up to a longer online course. I would love to do one but they are very expensive, so I make do with these little workshops. This intent of this latest one is to improve your design skills and also provide compositions to base abstract paintings on.

Heaps of collage paper are prepared; 3-5 sheets of 80 x 60 cm cheap paper and several pages of large sketch book paper. The idea is to create masses of gestural and different marks all over these papers using brushes attached to dowls or attached to the chest. Gestural whole body movement. Big brushes, small brushes, crayons, graphite, charcoal, textas, anything really. Black acrylic paint and some mid grey, left hand, right hand. No thinking or planning.

Then you decide on a size of board/substrate and prepare these for the collage: could be 15 x 15. I chose 30x 30cm.

When the papers are finished and dry, they are cut into squares, depending on the size of the board, aiming for about 4 per board. I had dozens.

Next you set about placing the pieces on the boards and move them around to positions that appeal to you. You can cut them further and play around. I had 14 of these to play with.

Pretty chaotic to start!

Not very inspiring and the cream tint in the collage paper is distracting.

Next I added some mid grey collage pieces because the large blocks of black felt too dominant.

I am still unhappy about the cream paper, more so now that I am adding the mid grey which has a bluish tint. I will persist and might mix up some paint, more compatible greys and whites.

Who knows where they will end up. I hope by my June news I have a finished painting to show.

This past week I changed all the paintings at the doctors clinics, ensuring they are all labelled and on theme. It seems like the clinics were inundated with many new posters and other advertising material in my absence (has there perhaps been an election).

I reworked some of my Unearthed series of paintings to include images of the changing of the deciduous beech the Fagus. Worked well with the colour palette. These are now on display at Sandy Bay doctors.

In progress are two larger 80cm squares on the floral theme. They were looking a bit stilted so I attacked them with more gestural applications of paint. Happier now but not finished yet.

I recently sold another large floral in the same series #0848 Magenta abundance.

Not sure what I will work on next. May be some paintings based on my Jenny Nelson compositional experiments.
