An Indian summer

March 2025

Here in Tasmania we are enjoying a warm Indian summer after an unusually consistent warm summer. At times it has been a challenge to paint. I need to paint with the doors open and some days it is too hot. Unfortunately, other parts of Australia had very challenging weather with a cyclone swamping south east Queensland with rain and severe beach erosion. My thoughts are with those recovering from these events.

Output has slowed, although I have been working on and close to finishing some new work. Following on from my shapes series I explored the theme further based on two paintings and my sketches. I cropped paintings of a pebbly creek bed from a plein air excursion to Chauncy Vale a few years ago.

I used the same three basic colours; alizarin crimson, pthalo turquoise and Indian yellow. Mixed and with different dominances, the painting look very different. This is one of the crop inspirations and a few stages. The last image is the second version.

I am quite pleased with these. Yet to be named.

With my recent practice of working on both abstract and representational paintings concurrently, two new coastal panoramas are also almost finished. They are a little different from recent coastals in that they’re painted using palette knifes or silicon wedges. Based on some lost, but recently found small sketches painted after a trip to Swansea in July 2020. I was inspired to create larger paintings. The first image is of the original sketches (32 x 14cm)

The next two images are of the almost finished works which each measure 68 x 34cm

An upcoming exhibition at the Art Society of Tasmania titled Pathways, inspired me to paint this scene from Safety Cove on Tasman Peninsula, looking towards Tasman Island. I am not yet satisfied with it so its facing the wall for a while. The foliage is my problem; getting the balance between big shapes and small detail.

I had a lovely trip to Cygnet last week to deliver two paintings to the Huon Art Exhibition Group’s Annual. Such a beautiful drive. I also have two at Lady Franklin Gallery in the ‘On the edge’ March show.

A recent floral painting shown in my last newsletter, playing with mainly acrylic paint, inspired me to try two more. They didn’t work so well. I later realised that in the original I worked very loosely with the acrylic paint with just final details in oil at the end whereas in the later ones I moved too soon to adding oil paint, creating too much texture. I hope they are resolved without too much effort. Win some, lose some!!

Sometimes(well often actually) my clear intentions disappear once I have paint and a tool in my hand. I revert to intuition. Often this works, sometimes not. I need to get the balance right.

My work is available on an Australian online art gallery Bluethumb although I am adopting a low profile at the moment until my panel maker is recovered from hip surgery. I also sell through direct contact with my website or email.
