In January, I became engrossed in another project; a free online lesson with Jenny Nelson. It was really another process for starting abstract paintings. She called it a Shape Action List; 16 steps with a limited colour palette. I think by following a process with out planning or any idea of the end product, activates the intuition and spontaneity.
The actions included things like create 3 similar shapes in a mid tone, add some light and dark tones, outline the shapes clumsily, attach shapes, turn the work, remove part of shapes and straight lines etc.
It was fun to do and I was surprised at the different outcomes achieved. Not sure that they are finished. The main challenge I had was when I attempted two large paintings (60cm). They are ongoing although I am getting sick of them. Here are some. The first 3 are about 30-40cm and that last two are the larger ones that I am still working on. At the stage I should put them aside for a few days.
It is obvious that I prefer organic shapes isn’t it?
