A new oil stick inspires

12 April 2024

A very busy and productive month for me with several painting resolved and a shift in direction.  Last month I discussed two sets of very different work; one rather ethereal unstructured set of four is now complete and named for the seasons.

The second set was semi abstract still life, painted from my imagination. I spent a lot of time on these and they are still ongoing; three are still representational but the other three like the second one shown are more abstracted.

After the seasonal set I felt the need for more definition. A new oil stick Pthalo Green Pale inspired a new palette of magenta, turquoise, purple lime green and soft blues.  More definite marks and shapes. I painted on an undercoat of aqua blue. Enjoyed making these.

I then I moved effortlessly into two more with a similar palette but painted on an orangey background of magenta mixed with Indian yellow. Love this mix!

These pieces are more energetic, gestural and intuitive. Deemed finished and ready to be waxed.

Again I was drawn to doing something different so decided on more structure over a pale background in quadrants.  With backgrounds prepared in acrylic on two sheets, I then used blind drawing(closed my eyes and imagined the surface). Quite random but with full arm movement.

More shapes, lines and colours were added, to build the layers and texture. Quite happy with where they are going although I think I prefer the second one .

This week I had a major changeover at four of my doctors’ practices.  A revamped ‘Unearthed’ set is now at City Doctors. I reworked 5 existing paintings keeping the warm autumn colour theme. Less figurative and more subtle textures. Also included are two from my recent Inflections series of collage multi media. One of these was a Daily Pick by Bluethumb this week as well.   This one is Inflections 4

My plein air piece last month is yet to be finished and named, but could be ‘A walk on Howrah beach. The figure was added in the studio. I think it needs some seagulls?

Enjoy the changing season.
